Armed Man Takes Hostages in California After Downtown Bomb Threat
Police spokesperson Sally Selby confirmed that multiple people were inside the building when officers first arrived on scene, according to media. Crisis negotiators were swiftly deployed in an effort to bring the situation to a peaceful close.
In a sign of incremental progress, a second hostage was released shortly after 9 pm local time (0400 GMT Wednesday), following the earlier release of another individual during the evening hours. Selby confirmed that no injuries have been reported and that the Bakersfield Police Department's Crisis Negotiation Team has maintained continuous contact with the suspect throughout the standoff.
Earlier in the evening, Police Sgt. Eric Celedon told reporters that local and FBI negotiators had successfully secured the release of at least one hostage, and that those still being held appeared to be "in good health."
By approximately 11 pm (0600 GMT Wednesday), authorities confirmed that the FBI had assumed full command of SWAT operations, marking a significant escalation in federal involvement.
An early point of confusion arose when authorities initially identified the location as the "Chase Bank building." A Chase spokesperson moved quickly to clarify that the bank branch itself was vacant and entirely unconnected to the incident — the building also houses a number of other commercial offices.
The crisis began when police responded at approximately 1 pm local time (2000 GMT Tuesday) to a bomb threat reported on the 1500 block of 17th Street. Once officers established a security perimeter around the site, a number of occupants managed to evacuate safely. Authorities subsequently cleared the surrounding area and shut down nearby roads to traffic.
